Unemployed or Unemployable Youth

The transition from school directly into the world of work is the first unsupported transition made by a young person. It is in fact the first time that he or she has to make a decision about education and work. The other transitions from nursery to primary to secondary school are all automatic and supported. If a young person is able to go to university that move iis supported by both the school and the university. Often a choice of going to a local college is less well supported by the school careers system and in many cases a young person looking to go straight into a job is hardly given any support at all.  If we are not to end up with a huge pool of unemployed and maybe unemployable young people who may become a benefits burden on the state for many years ahead we have to address this problem urgently.
