Janet (the UK Universities’ Internet backbone) was down the other day in the West of Scotland. A class of Higher pupils in a school which was therefore without internet access were keen to join a video conference. The teacher was feeling thwarted when one of the pupils offered his laptop and dongle so saving the day.
I do not think that this pupil was aware of the impending breakdown of the network before leaving for school so I am led to the conclusion that he regularly brought his laptop and dongle to school. He is probably a minority of one in that school at the moment but it does show the direction in which the pupils’ world is moving. Educators and IT staff need to take this into account. Playing at being Canute will not make this trend go away.
