Bill Deedes in the Telegraph was being hard on Gordon again yesterday. I do think that some people are beginning to see him for what he really is.
He is not New Labour at all. To my mind he is starting to show himself as a good old fashioned socialist. He wants to change the world according to his ideas. Not for him liberty for the individual. In a way it is arrogance and paternalism. He wants to control people, see that they lead healthy lives, get the right education, hold the right views.
He has decided that Africa must be brought out of poverty. It's a very worthy cause, but he will pay for it with our money and Africans will not get much of a say if they want to keep his goodwill and get his help. What if his remedy does not work? And to me that appears quite likely, because Africa has received billions in aid over many years and the mess is, if anything, getting worse. Presumably Gordon will move on to some other worthy cause, because he is nothing if he is not an ambitious politician spinning his own image and reality must not be allowed to interfere with that.
